Apprenticeship in Furniture Design

Apprenticeship in Furniture Design

In the Chisel Creative Apprenticeship in Furniture Design Work-Trade Program, individuals of all levels of experience work in the Chisel Studio one day a week and take free classes from Chisel's Chief Designer and Community Education Director, Rachel McKenna, MFA.

The Chisel Apprenticeship is a work-trade program. Apprentices work 6-8 hours a week in the studio, assisting with Chisel's custom furniture design projects. Each apprentice gains valuable hands-on experience by shadowing one of our skilled core makers or working on their own dedicated task.

Once a week, apprentices take a small, personalized class with Chisel's Chief Designer and Director of Community Education. These interactive courses are dedicated to the apprentices' educational growth as makers, from beginning woodworking to advanced furniture design.

Accessibility and Opportunity

The Chisel Apprenticeship Program is an opportunity those who may not be able to afford a class at a conventional Community Makers Studio to learn furniture design. We at Chisel want everyone to have the opportunity to learn, regardless of income

Chisel strongly encourages women, LBGTQIA individuals, and people of color to apply and participate in the program. We strive to represent the unrepresented in a traditionally male-dominated field, and create a safe, non-hierarchical space for learning and growth.
